Authenticity is a conclusion built from the entire object, not one dramatic visual clue.
High-risk alterations: reperforation, regumming, filled thins, repaired tears, cancel removal or addition, forged overprints, altered color, fabricated covers, and certificates separated from their items.
Inspect the whole stamp
- Compare design details, printing method, paper, watermark, perforation, and format with a reliable reference.
- Inspect front, back, edges, perforation holes, gum, cancellation, and any repaired area under magnification.
- Check whether the claimed variety is recognized and whether its defining feature is constant and measurable.
- For valuable material, use an expertizing service appropriate to the country and specialty.
Certificate discipline
A certificate should identify the exact submitted item and state the opinion and limitations. Confirm that photographs, perforation defects, margins, cancels, or other unique features match the stamp in hand.
What a home inspection cannot do
Ultraviolet light, watermark detectors, backlighting, magnification, and comparison scans can reveal useful evidence, but none independently guarantees authenticity.
Compare current collector listings
Use listings to study descriptions, scans, certificates, and market supply. Asking prices are not completed-sale evidence.
